Drum roll please.....Ashley Gates

Let us turn our thoughts to our sister Ashley Gates.

Thank you. I appreciate you turning.

You know what I enjoyed about having Ashley? Week after week, there were service opportunities in Elders Quorum to help with moves. And week after week, I just shook my head and said, “oh shucks, that just doesn’t fit with Ashley.” And so, you ask, what does ring true with Ashley?

The environment. I am not sure who drives who or if they are just made for each other but Ashley and Chuck are both great examples of living green. So I decided I needed to do something in this space. We recently had a big time developer construct a monstrously huge high rise in the forest in front of our house. This was done without any permission from the city. Unfortunately, this development attracted some messy residents. Trash was strewn along the path to the high rise and spread out in all directions at the high rise. So I took Connor and Tara into the forest to clean up the area around the tree house that Ed built. We spent quite a bit of time not only cleaning that area but many other areas in front and behind our house. Even found an old bike frame. Tara was a trooper and I really enjoyed spending a chilly afternoon with her talking while beautifying the forest. Thanks Ashley for being an example in loving and preserving this earth.

Ashley works in the primary presidency in her ward. This was a slam dunk for me considering my wife works in the presidency as well. I needed to find some way to assist my wife. This may surprise some of you but my wife decided to craft a gift for each of the primary children. Side note: I found out my wife subscribes to a “craft of the month” club. I love crafts. Anyway, this craft for the primary children required some assistance and using my mad crafting skills,  I centered and glued many pictures of the temple to wood blocks. Some of you know that I have worked extensively with wood blocks under my pseudonym, Robot, so I was well prepared for this task. It was a great way to serve my wife and the primary and I was happy to associate the service with Ashley.

As I thought about what else I could do for Ashley, I again turned to the primary. I am blessed to be a primary teacher. I decided that I would take this past week to really magnify my calling. I just assume that all primary presidencies would want their teachers to magnify their callings so they would have nothing to worry about. That is what I did. Now, from this point, the sisters may not think too much of this particular service. The brothers, however, will be astounded.

First, I would like you to notice how I am dressed. This is not Sunday dress. That is right, I prepared my lesson before Sunday, before Sacrament meeting. Ladies, don’t worry if you don’t understand the significance of this…just ask your husband later. Magnification power of 10x.

Second, it may be hard to tell what I am doing here but I am actually using a Stampin Up product to cut out stars. I then put a message on each star to give to each student. Each star also had a scripture on the back. The brothers are now speechless. Shock and awe. That is how I roll. Magnification 100x.

Lastly, I had a table display. This is rarely attempted by brethren and for good reason. It is generally a total failure. I can hear the brothers saying, “oh no you didn’t!”.But yes, yes I carried it off almost perfectly right down to the requisite vegetation. Not only that but I had a take home treat and message. Magnification 1000x.

I am thankful I had the opportunity to serve Ashley in some way. Ashley is a fantastic mother. I know this because I see how her children respect others and love each other. I know she works hard outside of the home as well. She does a great job of balancing all her roles. I am grateful to have her as a sister in law.

Wait...I've seen this movie...

When I received Charise's name I thought, I just had her a couple of years ago.  Actually I had Bill but my thoughts were along the same line.  All of us admire how much you go through with your wonderful kids.  As Dillon grows up, Brighton also grows up.  I have found a non-profit organization in Anchorage that I love!  It is called ARC.  https://thearcofanchorage.org/ "The Arc of Anchorage helps Alaskans who experience intellectual, developmental disabilities, or mental illness achieve lives of dignity and independence as valued members of our community. We offer a full array of services that cover the lifespan of the people we serve. In consultation with our staff, families choose the services that best meet their needs."  They start as young as 12. They also have one in NC http://www.arcnc.org/

I was able to get involved in a fundraiser dinner via Alaska Air.  Our station is working on being able to hire some of their "Graduates" to help in our lobby.  Our station also worked with ARC to put on, "Wings for Autism." http://www.thearc.org/wingsforautism  It is a trial flight for people and families with Autism.  Unfortunately, I ended up being out of town for the big day with AJ, but you can see the Alaska Air bag I helped with on the left hand side of the photo.  Alaska was able to "donate" a plane for the 90 min taxi ride.  I love and admire you Char...sooo much!

To Tiffany...From Wayne

Merry Christmas Tiffany, I chose a service that you would do had you been closer to NC.  I spent time with AJ...plus Lani asked me to write down my experiences with him.  So me being lazy, I will use this for both.

When I wanted to do this, first hurdle I thought was Lani.  I did not think she would trust me with AJ and figured I was mean and impatient.  That's true, but I can rise to the occasion and I guess she gambled he was such a handful, she would take what she could get.  I knew AJ's favorite word was NO and he was a master of it with me.  While flying there I thought of D&C 4: "Therefore, O ye that embark in the service of your God; see that ye serve him with all your heart, might mind and strength that you may stand blameless before him at the last day."  I figured I needed some strength.  Turns out the only strength I needed was with how fast he was stripping down to bare feet all the time.  He had patience with me and strengthened me.  He lead me by taking my hand and showing me where I needed to take him.

I also spent some time with Lani and Hock.  I can report there was never a complaint of "why me or us?"  Instead there was an attitude of "what do I need to learn?"  Instead of choosing self pity, they choose growth.  I could see the growth in them, even if they can't right now.  In the Lords plan, understanding comes line upon line, precept upon precept; in other words, understanding and knowledge come and the price of patience.  President Uchtdorf says, often the deep valley of our present will be understood only by looking back on them from the mountains of our future experience.  Often we can't see the Lords hand in our lives until long after trials have passed.

My wife was the first one with the idea of helping with AJ.  She is a life saver in general and you can't be a life saver if you are swimming like all the others, you need to be in the look out for those in need and she is a great example for me.

I heard people say they feel the spirit when in the temple, outdoors, church or in homes.  Upon arriving, I was surprised to feel the spirit with a red-haired clown at the Ronald McDonald house.  We were all humble and equals in receiving the blessing and sacrifice of others.  We all had assignments to keep the place clean and it was easy for the spirit to reside there when we were all working together.  We did not eat Big Mac's that didn't sell that day, rather different organizations brought in well made meals.  It felt like Amy was pregnant again with all the different homemade meals.  AJ showed me they had chocolate milk and we both got hopped up on that and chicken nuggets.  I felt often that AJ was serving and helping me.  Usually when I do service I love it because it feels like the Lord is my companion.  This time I had a different kind of companion, he was much shorter, but a spiritual giant too, he was AJ.  He helped and served me more than I did him; unless you count one of the diapers I changed then I won by a mud slide.  It's not often that I feel the spirit all day everywhere I go but I did.

Tiff this was something I was happy to do in your honor.  Thank you for the opportunity.  I love you.

Have I Helped Anyone In Need????

Hi Dad,
I love you so much! I am always so thankful for the extra time you put in to teaching us the importance of doing a job "right" the first time. I remember so well, when I was 16 and had come home from a very long day of seminary, high school making posters and then cheering at the football game... I was exhausted!!! I was ready to fall in to bed. I had left that day having done "my dish job" of loading the dishwasher, but I did not do the by hands or clean the sink. I honestly didn't have time. It never occurred to me that after "working so hard all day" that I would be expected to stay up even later and do it before going to bed. I went to bed. And just after falling asleep, you came in and woke me up and asked me to come in to the kitchen. You let me me know very sternly that I was expected to do my job 100% before I went to bed each day. I told you that the food was dried on and wouldn't come off without soaking overnight. You restated that under no circumstances was I to return to bed without finishing the job. I remember crying and thinking that you had no clue how tired I was. You filled the sink with HOT HOT HOT water and told me to get to work.

This experience had a profound impact on my life. I remember it constantly!!! (Almost daily!) As I stood there crying and murmuring about how unfair it all was, I remember thinking....
#1. My dad has to get up at 5:00 in the morning to go to work.
#2. My dad often does not get home until after dinner.
#3. My dad is ALWAYS the last person to leave a church activity, even though he is never on the committee because he is the last person cleaning and mopping the floor. That's not his job, but it doesn't stop our family from always being the last ones to leave the building.
#4. I am a spoiled brat with some serious entitlement issues.

All you were asking of me was to do the one job I was given that day to the best of my ability. That's it. The Best I Could.

This year I have tried to do every job to the best of my ability.
In August I was asked if I could possibly take on coordinating a special project of feeding 6 homeless families 3 times a year. I was feeling very busy.... but immediately thought of you and the church service thing... and I replied, "yes, I'd love to."

I have tried to make it a really special experience for my family to learn the lesson of service. I have worked hard to make certain the meals were healthy and looked "special" so that the families felt that they were being given a wonderful dining experience.... not just "food".

My first event was in August, and then we did another dinner tonight. (December 4) I get to do it again in May. It is an onging thing, so my gift will keep me trying to make you proud for a few years!

I love you daddy and I am so honored to be your daughter. I know you love me and that is the reason you woke me up all those years ago to teach me such a special lesson!

2014 Gates Family Season of Service

The family of Ed and Kriss Gates are continuing their family tradition of performing service for, or on behalf of, each other in lieu of giving gifts.

In 2009, with families spread across five state throughout the country, we decided our traditional gift exchange was too costly and difficult. Amy suggested that instead of the commercialized practice of buying small gifts only to pay high shipping costs, we each perform acts of service in the name of the sibling whose name we were assigned at random.

Just as in the past, our good friend Carrie Collins drew the names and notified each of us privately to keep secret who was doing good in your name. On Christmas Day, we reveal who we had and how we chose to celebrate the new tradition of the Gates Family Season of Service.

This tradition has helped us focus on serving our communities and one another during the annual celebration of the birth of our Savior Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
